Reflection on Being a Camp Chaplain

Marcy Dawson

I did one week of volunteer chaplaincy at Camp of the Cross for the Mini Camp in the summer of 2023, what a pleasure. So very relaxing it felt like a retreat. I was mostly just a presence. Chaplains are a support for the staff. You say prayers during chapel or campfire. Take part In bible study, lead staff devotions, and visit with campers. They gave me a room at the retreat center.

The camp is run well. Organized. I really enjoyed it. During the time I was there it was the youngest group of kids, 1st and 2nd graders, and family camp. About 61 campers there. The kids did activities like swimming, games and Tye dying. They sang lots of camp songs, did skits for the Bible Story and had memory verses. The counselors were engaged with the kids. Chapel and campfires were held at different parts of the camp outdoors.

I visited with the counselors, one was from Turkey who came over on a summer Visa. Most are college students, most were here for several years. I would recommend kids going to camp here, and pastors signing up for chaplain next year.
