FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UCC

Jamestown, ND

First Congregational United Church of Christ in Jamestown is the first church in North Dakota to become Open and Affirming to Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Trans-gender Christians.  This progressive church continues a vibrant ministry to many elderly people who find Jamestown to be the perfect balance between small town living and access to elderly living facilities and medical care.  Last year, they opened part of the facilities to become a bus depot for the many people moving to Jamestown for the low unemployment rate found in Stutsman county. First Congregational is known for many annual ecumenical fellowship events like a Swiss steak supper, Valentine's Day tea party, a coffee fellowship with neighboring Presbyterian and Methodist churches and a Children's Miracle Network role-playing and collectible card game fundraiser.

This year, they are revitalizing Sunday mornings through Wild Word Worship, a deliberately creative and interactive style of worship for the age of social media.  Worshipers are encouraged to interact in worship through dramatic events, open discussion, mission and art projects.  Wild Word Worship has included activities like signing Valentine's Cards for shut-ins, an ugly tie contest, making origami, discussing forgotten maternal images for God in the Bible, and reenacting the defeat of Goliath by King David.
