The First Congregational Church in Hebron was formed in 1914 and is one of two UCC Churches in Hebron. It is a small church made up of young families and children. We have a strong youth ministry program. Most of the congregation are adults that work at the school either as teachers or other jobs. Pastor Marcy Dawson has been our pastor Since 2006. At that time we had 3 young children in the church, with no active Sunday School.

Every year the children participate in 2 plays. The Christmas play and one in the spring where the children act out their favorite Biblical Stories. There is almost 100 % participation in Church School. 10 years earlier we switched Sunday School to Wednesday after school. Many of the parents were teachers, and had to teach their own kids in school, so to give them a break Pastor Marcy started teaching the children’s Sunday School after school, since Sunday she already had 2 churches to serve. The school bus picks the kids up after school and then drops them off at the church. The parents come and pick them up after Church School. At first this was met with opposition; the argument was then they won’t come to church on Sunday. Even though many weren’t coming to church regularly anyway.

To bring the children to church more often, they have regularly helped out during the church service. The children help with ushering and greeting those coming for worship. They take offering from a young age, and, as they become older, they help with reading the scriptures and playing musical instruments during services. Children participate in the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Every Fall we have a special service for blessing the children and all the teachers and workers at the school, which is open to all at the school. Pastor Marcy is also part of the Community Youth Ministry Program that is made up of members of all the churches in Hebron and Glen Ullin and that brings in Christian speakers and programs for the children at the school.

In December we have a bake sale and lunch every year for the community during Santa Claus Days. The women’s organization “The Guiding Light Society” has been doing this for 70 years. We raise money to give for missions throughout the year, and help purchase needs for the church like new ovens, etc.

This past year with the ambulance the church worked to bring AED’s (Automated External Defibrillator) to the community. Hebron is working on becoming a Cardiac Ready Community. Many of our members participated with Pastor Marcy to help teach CPR and raise money to bring 15 AED’s to the community. Hebron is greater than 1 hour from a hospital that can treat heart attacks. Having AED’s and trained people in the area increases the survivability if residents have a sudden cardiac arrest.
